JOB TITLE:

Commercial Underwriter

REPORTING TO:

Team leader / Underwriting Manager

PURPOSE:

Woking as part of the Commercial Underwriting team you will be analysing risk in insurance proposals, determining policy terms and calculating premiums on the basis of actuarial, statistical and background information. Identifying and writing profitable business in support of the Company’s achievement of its overall business objectives.
This is a specialist underwriting role whereby you will be advising on our delegated motor trade scheme and general commercial products, providing quotations and analysing risks whilst ensuring that any business written is profitable and within the underwriting authority and FCA guidelines. The role will require binding risks by quoting and agreeing policy cover and dealing with key stakeholders internally and externally.

MAIN DUTIES:

  • Administering specialist delegated motor trade product.
  • Assessing standard and non-standard underwriting information.
  • Offering appropriate quotations and acceptance of risks.
  • Retention of existing broker base.
  • Ensuring all underwriting is conducted within Authority limits.
  • Reviewing referred claims.
  • Responding to complaints in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Maintaining regular contact with trading partners and acting professionally at all times.
  • Ensuring that trading standards are being met.
  • Liaising with Accounts Department to assist with collection of premiums.
  • Providing exceptional customer service.
  • Monitoring and keeping up to date with technical and regulatory matters and act accordingly.

GENERAL DUTIES:

  • Maintain excellent standards of professional conduct, in line with Company policy and procedure, compliance / FCA guidelines and Core Values.
  • Adhere to the FCA regulations and requirements at all times.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures, including health and safety procedures.
  • Be an effective, willing and enthusiastic team player.
  • Maintenance of CPD.
  • Undertake such internal and/or external training as deemed necessary by the Company.
  • Any other duties that can reasonably be requested by your Team Leader/Underwriting
  • Manager or representatives’ acting on behalf of your Team Leader/Underwriting Manager.

IS THIS JOB FOR ME AND AM I SUITABLE?

The successful applicant must meet the following essential criteria:

• Qualifications: 5 GCSE’s grade C or above, including Maths and English (or equivalent).
• Experience: Strong commercial insurance experience, Commercial insurance product knowledge, working knowledge of Microsoft Office to include Word and Excel, Data analysis experience.
• Competencies: Excellent interpersonal and communications skills with the ability to negotiate and influence effectively at all levels using a variety of media, Self-motivated with the ability to act on your own initiative, effective, willing and enthusiastic team player, Able to multi-task, deal with unexpected set-backs and identify alternative solutions.

THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA IS DESIRABLE:

• Qualifications: Work towards, or in possession of Cert CII or Dip CII
• Experience: Experience of working in an insurance trading environment, Customer service experience, Experience of working within a commercial insurance underwriting environment.

REMUNERATION AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Competitive salary, negotiable depending on qualifications and experience
  • Hours of work; 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 9.00am – 5.00pm
